"Home, Sweet, Home: Choosing Your Dorm"
Are you ready? Tomorrow is a big day. It's the first day of the Freshman Housing Lottery! The lottery gives you the opportunity to choose where you would most want to live. But before you choose where you want to live, you have to do your homework.
By now you should have received a packet from Residential Life that includes information on the housing process. It also includes the I3 video, a series of student-produced films that showcase their dorm and residence hall communities. Each dorm has a different personality and culture and it's up to you to learn about them with the goal of finding the right fit for you. With 200-400 people in every dorm, you are bound to find a community that you like.
In addition to the I3 videos and housing booklet, you can check out the MIT Housing Office website which has detailed information about each of the residence halls, http://housing.mit.edu/undergraduate/residences.
Probably the best way to get information about the dorms is to talk to MIT residents themselves. You can contact upper classmen that you met during CPW or email one of our fantastic Orientation Coordinators who will be here all summer (Shelly- srjin@mit.edu or Jesse- triplett@mit.edu). Ask them questions about dorm activities (ski trips, sushi dinners, formals, etc...), about dorm life, how active their dorm is, how social their dorm is, etc... Try to get a good idea of whether or not you would fit there. If you have general questions, feel free to comment on this blog!
Most importantly...don't forget to enter the lottery between June 7th and June 17th!

(Please note that comments are closed after 30 days to reduce spam.)Does the day you enter the lottery affect your odds of getting the dorm you want? Is it better to enter early?

They said that it does not matter when you enter as long as it is before the deadline.

Hi Zoe and thanks to Jacobi for responding. The date you enter the lottery will not affect your chances of getting the dorm you want. If you are still researching the residence halls, don't worry. Just make sure you enter the lottery before the deadline, June 17th!

What dorms have more personal bathrooms? I don't think they included that info in the packet.

Hi Maggie,
Most dorms on campus have shared bathrooms per floor/entry/section of floor. Depending on the dorm, some of the bathrooms are co-ed while others are by gender.
The only dorms with personal bathrooms are Simmons and Bexley, I believe. Simmons doubles often have bathrooms in them. Otherwise, a couple of singles share each bathroom. In Bexley, suites have their own bathrooms.
I plan on a writing a post exploring dorms in more detail so watch out for that :)
