"Orientation- It's not just for students!"

Hi Everyone,

This blog post is one you may want to share with your parents.  Just as you will be attending Orientation to help you with your transition to MIT, parents have an orientation too!  Orientation events for parents include a Welcome and Convocation hosted by President Hockfield, panels on various aspects of the MIT experience (ex. academics, student life, health and safety, and athletics) and a Jazz event on Saturday evening.  Parent Orientation events take place Friday, August 26th - Monday, August 29th.  You can find a schedule of events for Parent Orientation at, http://mit.edu/firstyear/2015/orientation/parent/schedule.html.

Some parents may be wondering if they should attend Parent Orientation.   If your parents did not attend CPW, Parent Orientation can give them an opportunity to get to know the MIT campus and the Cambridge/Boston area, help them gain some perspective on your upcoming student experience, and most importantly...help you move in and get settled!

If your parents did attend CPW back in April, they may find that some of the information and panels are repetitive.  While they are certainly welcome to attend Parent Orientation another great option would be to attend Family Weekend instead.  Family weekend occurs over the weekend of October 14th-16th.  For more information on this great event, visit http://alum.mit.edu/parents/FamilyWeekend.

If your parents are interested in attending Parent Orientation, they can register by visiting, http://mit.edu/firstyear/2015/orientation/parent/reg.html.  Keep in mind that registration for this event ends on August 1st.  If you have any questions on Parent Orientation, feel free to comment below!

Hello Laura, I am a parent of an incoming international student. I am trying to find out what do freshmen do after the student orientation is over as I notice classes do not start till Sept 7? Where can I get this information, please? Thank you.

Between Saturday September 3rd and Wednesday, September 7th, students register for their classes and Rush and Sorority Recruitment occur. Schedules of all the events will be available during Orientation.

Hi Laura,
As the parent of an incoming freshman, I am trying to figure out if I should come up for parent orientation weekend, or the weekend after. I was at MIT for CPW & thought that perhaps a better use of my travel time & money would be to fly up there once my daughter's dorm assignment was permanent so I could help her fit out her room with bookshelves, rug, etc. that she will not be able to get without a car....what do you think?

ALSO, if I do NOT come up for orientation, will the convocation & scheduled presentations be available on the mit website so I can watch them from afar?

Thanks,

Laurie

Hi Laurie,
You have a great question and I am sure a lot of other parents are wondering the same thing. It is up to you and your student whether you would like to come up for Parent Orientation or not. Many parents feel that their time (and money) is better spent assisting their students with getting settled into their residence hall rooms, especially if they have already been to another informational program such as CPW. Unfortunately programs such as panels and convocation will not be broadcast online but if any questions pop up MIT orientation staff will be available throughout the summer to assist you. Thanks for your question!

Hi Laura,
1) When student check in on Aug 27 do they go straight to the dorm for their belongings & stuffs?

2)Is the dorm during that time is a shared room with others?

3)What if the flight arrive 6pm Aug 25, can the student check into their dorm room right away too or they have to book hotel until Aug 27?

4)How do we find out what will student do after check in & prior to classes start?

Thank you.

Hi Mariana,
When students arrive on August 27th they should first go to their temporary residence hall assignment and drop off their luggage. Students should then proceed to the Orientation check in area which will be located in West Lounge in the Student Center.
Students may or may not have to share a dorm room with others. It will depend on the residence hall that they are assigned to. Students will find out more when residence hall assignments are distributed in July. Students may begin checking in on August 26. Once they check in they will participate in Orientation which includes a variety of activities to help acclimate students to the Institute. Students will also take placement exams and register for classes. When they check in for Orientation they will receive a complete schedule of activities. Hope this helps!

Hi Laura
When exactly do freshmen move from their temporary (orientation)residence to their permanent residence?

Posted by: Sonia on July 12, 2011 1:57 PM

Hi Sonia, When students arrive for FPOPs they will check in to and stay in their assigned residence halls. During Orientation students will be able to explore and learn about other residence halls through REX events. If they decide to switch residence halls students will then enter the housing lottery. The lottery results will be available on August 31st and move-in day will be on September 1st. Typically only about 100 first year students will end up switching residence halls. Thanks for your question!
